Percentage-Based Late Submission Penalties

We’ve released one of our most requested features: late submission penalties can now be set as a percentage.

Until now, late penalties were applied as a fixed number of points. With this update, penalties are calculated as a percentage of the student’s grade, so they scale proportionally to each student’s score.

Here’s a side-by-side look at how the penalty works before and after the update:

Percentage-based penalties are now the standard across all related workflows, including assignments created directly from the books and Master Class assignments. As before, the gradebook will display each student’s final grade with the penalty already applied.

What happens to existing assignments?

  • Assignments with penalties created before September 2026 will keep the fixed-point penalty.
  • Assignments created after September 2026 will automatically switch to the percentage-based calculation once the feature is released.
